It seems like every time you turn around, someone is defining what Cloud computing is and how their product or service offering is the Cloud. As such, it can be complicated to understand what Cloud computing is, or at a minimum, make your head spin just sorting through all the hype. It is really pretty simple. Think of cloud computing as converting your computer room or data center into a utility service you purchase like electricity. Yes, it is that simple.

You could buy and build your own electric generating plant for your business, but you don’t. The capital expense would be high, the expertise to deploy it is specific and expensive, and the ongoing operation of the plant would be a distraction from your business. Instead, your company buys electricity every month in the quantity that you use, and let the utility company worry about how to build it, run it, and to get it you.

You’ve likely heard the terms Private Cloud and Public Cloud as well. These are equally simple to understand. A Private Cloud is one that you still own and operate, but you do so as a utility, possibly even charging back divisions or departments of your company a share of the costs. Some companies choose to lease their on premise Private Cloud infrastructure to even out the 3-5 year refresh cycles. You can also contract with companies, such as Sovran, to manage your private cloud infrastructure for a fixed monthly fee. The Public Cloud exploits more of the advantages of scale to offer utilities like computing services or applications where multiple companies are securely using a shared infrastructure. Public Cloud services can also be bundled with operational services.
